“Garden Island,”

it’s the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands and one of the most naturally beautiful places I’ve ever photographed. From dramatic cliffs and lush rainforests to golden beaches and incredible sunsets, Kauai offers endless opportunities for photographers.

As someone who loves capturing coastal scenery and natural landscapes, Kauai quickly became one of my favourite places to explore with a camera.

The Magic of the Na Pali Coast

One of the most breathtaking locations on the island is the Nā Pali Coast. Towering emerald cliffs rise dramatically from the ocean, creating one of the most iconic landscapes in Hawaii. The scale of the coastline is incredible, and photographing it from the air or from the water gives you a completely different perspective.

For landscape photographers, the changing light along the cliffs is spectacular—especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun brings out the rich greens and deep shadows of the valleys.

           Sunset at Poipu Beach

The south side of the island is home to the beautiful Poipu Beach. This area is famous for its calm water, golden sand, and some of the best sunsets on the island.

As the sun drops toward the horizon, the sky often lights up with shades of orange, pink, and purple. It’s the perfect setting for capturing dramatic sunset images or simply enjoying the moment as the day comes to an end.

Sea turtles are also frequently spotted here, which makes the experience even more special for visitors and photographers alike.

Waimea Canyon – The Grand Canyon of the Pacific

Another must-visit location for photographers is Waimea Canyon. Often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” it stretches for miles with deep red cliffs, rugged ridges, and lush green valleys.

The views from the lookouts are incredible, especially when clouds drift through the canyon and create dramatic lighting conditions. It’s a place where every few minutes the scene changes, giving photographers new compositions and colours to capture.

           Waterfalls and Tropical Landscapes

Kauai’s tropical climate means waterfalls are everywhere. One of the most photographed is Wailua Falls, where twin cascades plunge down a jungle-covered cliff. Early morning is the best time to photograph the falls, when the light is soft and rainbows often appear in the mist.

Driving around the island, you quickly realise how lush and vibrant everything is. Palm trees, mountains, waterfalls, and dramatic coastlines make Kauai a dream destination for landscape photography.

Why Kauai Is a Photographer’s Paradise

What makes Kauai so special is the variety of scenery packed into one island. Within a short drive you can photograph towering cliffs, pristine beaches, rainforest valleys, and spectacular sunsets.

For anyone who loves travel and photography, Kauai offers endless inspiration. Every corner of the island seems to reveal another incredible view waiting to be captured.

And sometimes, the best moments aren’t even the ones you plan—they’re the ones you stumble across while exploring with your camera and simply taking in the beauty of this remarkable Hawaiian island.

Poipu Beach on the south shore of Kauai is one of the best beaches in Hawaii for a reason. From calm swimming areas to rolling sunset surf, it delivers that classic Hawaiian beach experience in one perfectly curved stretch of golden sand.

I arrived early, when the light was soft and the water was glassy. The reef creates a protected area ideal for swimming and snorkeling, while just beyond it, consistent waves attract surfers throughout the day. It’s the kind of beach where families, swimmers, and surfers all share the shoreline comfortably.

By afternoon, the surf builds and the energy shifts. Watching local surfers carve through clean Hawaiian waves as the sun begins to drop is something special. The south-facing coastline means Poipu is known for reliable sunshine — and that makes the sunsets even better.

As evening settles in, the sky explodes into orange, pink, and deep gold. Silhouettes of surfers catching their final waves against a blazing horizon create the ultimate sunset surf scene. For photographers, it’s pure magic. For everyone else, it’s simply unforgettable.

If you’re searching for the best sunset beach in Kauai, great beginner-friendly surf, and classic Hawaii coastal scenery, Poipu Beach belongs at the top of your list.

Narooma – Chasing Light on the South Coast

There are places that quietly get under your skin as a photographer. For me, Narooma on the South Coast of NSW is one of them. Every time I load the car with camera bodies, lenses, filters, and a thermos of coffee, I know I’m heading somewhere that delivers—consistently, and in all conditions.

As a photographer, my focus has always been coastal landscapes, natural light, and authentic moments. Narooma gives me all three in abundance.

Sunrise at Australia Rock

If there’s a signature frame from Narooma, it’s Australia Rock. I’ve shot it in moody grey dawns, blazing summer sunrises, and glassy calm mornings when the inlet looks like polished steel.

I usually arrive well before first light. The pre-dawn blue hour is where the magic begins—long exposures smoothing the water, subtle colour shifts in the sky, and that iconic rock formation silhouetted against the horizon. As the sun breaks, warm tones wrap around the headland and reflections dance across the channel.

From a technical perspective, it’s a dream location:

            Strong foreground interest

            Natural leading lines

            Elevated vantage points

Dynamic skies rolling in from the Pacific

From a creative perspective, it’s pure coastal storytelling.

           Turquoise Waters at Glasshouse Rocks

Further south, Glasshouse Rocks is where drama lives. The volcanic formations rise straight from impossibly clear turquoise water. On a calm day, it feels serene. On a big swell, it becomes raw and powerful.

I love working this location with a mix of shutter speeds:

Slow exposures for that silky, ethereal feel

Faster shutter speeds to freeze the energy of crashing waves

The textures here are incredible—weathered stone, swirling foam patterns, shifting cloud structures. It’s the kind of place that challenges you to keep experimenting.

           Golden Hour Over Wagonga Inlet

When the sun begins to drop behind the hills, Wagonga Inlet becomes a mirror. Boats settle into still water. The sky ignites with oranges and pinks. Reflections stretch across the frame like brush strokes.

These evenings remind me why I started Craig Stevens Photography in the first place. Coastal light has personality. It shifts quickly, demands attention, and rewards patience.

There’s something grounding about standing quietly with a tripod as the day fades. It’s not just about capturing an image—it’s about being present in that exact slice of time.

The Rhythm of the South Coast

Narooma isn’t rushed. It moves at a different pace. Fishermen head out early. Locals walk the shoreline at dusk. The ocean sets the schedule.

As a travel and landscape photographer, that rhythm matters. It allows space to observe:

            Cloud movement

            Tide patterns

            Changing light angles

            Subtle colour transitions

Every return trip gives me something new. Different swell direction. Different wind. Different sky. Same coastline—completely different mood.

Why Narooma Keeps Pulling Me Back

Some destinations are spectacular but fleeting. Narooma is layered. The more time I spend here, the more I see.

It’s not just about iconic locations like Australia Rock or Glasshouse Rocks. It’s the quiet headlands, the shifting sands, the pastel dawns, and those deep indigo evenings when the last light fades into the Pacific.

Through Craig Stevens Photography, my goal is simple: capture the essence of coastal NSW in its most honest form. Narooma makes that easy.

And every time I pack up after a shoot, I already know—I’ll be back.

           Experience Kalbarri National Park

Kalbarri National Park is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. From the moment I arrived, it felt raw, vast, and quietly powerful—where red earth meets endless sky, and nature seems completely unapologetic in its beauty.

Nature’s Window: A Framed Moment in Time

One of my first stops was

, and it’s every bit as iconic as the photos suggest. The walk out there is peaceful, winding through rugged terrain that slowly builds anticipation. Standing in front of the natural rock frame, looking out over the Murchison River carving its way through the gorge below, I felt completely still. It’s the kind of view that makes you pause—not just to take a photo, but to actually take it in. Early morning light brought out deep reds and soft shadows, and I could have stayed there for hours just watching the landscape breathe.

, and this was a completely different experience. Suspended over the gorge, the walkways stretch out into open space, giving you uninterrupted views across the park. There’s something both thrilling and humbling about standing on the edge, looking down into the ancient rock formations shaped over millions of years. The scale of it all is hard to describe—you really feel how small you are out here. As a photographer, the changing light and dramatic lines made it impossible to put the camera down.

, where steep cliff walls drop sharply to the river below. The lookout offers an incredible vantage point, and the contrast between the harsh rock faces and the calm river is striking. Further along,

delivers panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see, especially impressive in the late afternoon when the colours soften and the shadows grow long.

           Silence, Space, and Sunset Colours

What I loved most about Kalbarri National Park was the sense of space and silence. There’s no rush here—just winding roads, lookout points that reward curiosity, and landscapes that change with every step and every hour of light. As the sun dipped lower, the park transformed into a palette of deep reds, burnt oranges, and purples, reminding me why this part of Western Australia is so special.

           Why Kalbarri Stays With You

Kalbarri isn’t just a destination you visit—it’s a place you feel. And once you’ve stood on the edge of the gorge, framed the world through Nature’s Window, or looked out from the Skywalk, it’s a place that never really leaves you.

Kalbarri, Western Australia: Watching the Day Fade Away

Kalbarri is one of those places that quietly gets under your skin.

It’s not loud or busy, and it doesn’t try to impress you straight away. Instead, it waits—until you find yourself standing on a clifftop, camera in hand, watching the sun sink into the Indian Ocean, wondering how something so simple can feel so powerful.

           Arriving in Kalbarri

The drive into Kalbarri feels like you’re leaving the everyday behind. Red earth stretches out in every direction, the air feels drier, cleaner, and somehow slower. When the ocean finally appears, it’s a reminder that this small coastal town sits right on the edge of something vast.

Kalbarri is relaxed and unpretentious. It’s the kind of place where mornings start slowly and plans are often built around the light rather than the clock.

           Exploring the Landscape

What struck me most about Kalbarri is the contrast. Inland, the Murchison River has carved deep gorges through ancient sandstone. Standing at places like Nature’s Window or the Skywalk, you feel tiny—looking out over a landscape shaped over millions of years. The colours shift constantly, especially as the sun moves lower, pulling warm tones out of the rock.

Along the coast, everything changes again. The cliffs are raw and dramatic, with waves smashing into them below. Locations like Red Bluff and Island Rock feel wild and untamed, and you can’t help but pause there for longer than you planned.

           Sunset Moments

Sunset is when Kalbarri truly slows you down.

As the sun drops toward the horizon, the sky begins to glow—soft oranges turn to deep reds and purples, and the cliffs light up as if they’re holding onto the last warmth of the day. The wind eases, the ocean darkens, and for a few minutes, everything feels perfectly still.

These are the moments I come back for. No noise, no rush—just light, colour, and the quiet hum of the ocean below. Every sunset feels different, but each one leaves the same sense of calm.

           Why Kalbarri Stays With Me

Kalbarri isn’t just somewhere you visit—it’s somewhere you feel. It reminds you to slow down, to look longer, and to appreciate the beauty in simply being present. Whether you’re photographing the cliffs, walking along the river, or watching another unforgettable sunset, Kalbarri has a way of staying with you long after you leave.

For me, it’s not just about the views—it’s about the moments in between, when the light fades and the day quietly comes to an end.

Western Australia had been on our “one day” list for years, but like many dream destinations, it took a nudge to turn it into a plan. That nudge came when friends of ours—another couple visiting from overseas—told us they were heading to Western Australia. A few messages and video chats later, flights were booked. While WA was the overall focus of our trip, we had identified a few spots to check out. We flew over from NSW to meet them, keen for sunshine, reef time, and a reunion that would take us far from our everyday routines and straight into one of Australia’s most beautiful coastal pockets, Coral Bay.

What followed was a trip that felt both adventurous and deeply relaxing—proof that Coral Bay isn’t just for hardcore off-roaders or luxury resort-goers, but for anyone with a sense of curiosity, a swimsuit, and a love of wide-open spaces.

First Impressions: A Small Town on a Big Coast

Coral Bay is tiny. Blink and you could almost miss it, especially if you’re used to sprawling beach towns or busy resort strips. But that’s part of its charm. Sitting on the edge of the Ningaloo Coast, about 1,200 kilometres north of Perth, Coral Bay feels remote without being inaccessible.

For travellers without a four-wheel drive, this is good news. The roads leading into Coral Bay are sealed, and the town itself is compact and easy to get around on foot. You can drive in with a standard car, park it for days, and barely need it again. Everything—accommodation, beaches, tours, cafés—sits within a short stroll.

When we arrived, the light was that unmistakable WA kind of light: bright, clean, and somehow sharper than anywhere else. The ocean shifted between turquoise, sapphire, and pale aqua depending on where the sun hit it. Even before we checked in, we knew this place was special.

Why Coral Bay Works for So Many Types of Travellers

One of the things that struck us almost immediately was how diverse the crowd was. Couples on romantic getaways, backpackers with reef shoes dangling from their packs, families with kids still sandy from the beach, retirees towing caravans—it was all there, coexisting easily.

Coral Bay has a laid-back, unpretentious vibe. There’s no pressure to dress up or tick off must-see attractions. You can be as active or as lazy as you like. For people travelling by car (but not 4WD), it’s ideal: you get access to one of the world’s great reef systems without needing specialist gear or vehicles. If you happen to have a 4WD, there is even MORE to do!

Our friends, visiting Western Australia for the first time, kept commenting on how relaxed everything felt. “It’s wild,” they said, “but also easy.” That’s probably the best summary of Coral Bay we could offer.

Ningaloo Reef: Where the Ocean Comes to You

The star of Coral Bay is Ningaloo Reef. Unlike the Great Barrier Reef, which often requires a boat trip to reach the best snorkelling spots, Ningaloo comes right up to the shore.

From the main beach, you can wade in, put your face in the water, and find yourself floating above coral gardens filled with fish within minutes. Parrotfish, wrasse, reef sharks, rays—every swim brought something new.

We spent our first full day doing very little else. Morning snorkel. Lunch. Afternoon snorkel. Sunset walk. Repeat.

For our overseas friends, this was mind-blowing. For us, it was a reminder of how extraordinary Australia’s natural assets really are. No crowds, no queues, no permits—just reef, right there.

Swimming with Whale Sharks: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

If there’s one experience that puts Coral Bay on the global map, it’s swimming with whale sharks. These gentle giants migrate through Ningaloo’s waters between roughly March and August, and Coral Bay is one of the best places in the world to encounter them ethically and responsibly. While we didn't get the opportunity to swim with these magnificent creatures, we hope to in the future.

We advise booking a whale shark tour months in advance. Spots fill quickly. It will be the kind of memory that stays vivid long after the tan fades.

Boat Tours, Coral Viewing, and Reef Adventures

Whale sharks might be the headline act, but Coral Bay offers plenty of other ocean-based adventures. Glass-bottom boat tours are popular, especially for those who want to see the reef without getting wet or who are travelling with people of mixed swimming abilities. We did one on a calm afternoon and were surprised by how much you can see without even entering the water.

Snorkelling tours take you to spots further along the reef where coral formations are larger and marine life more concentrated. For non-drivers or those without 4WDs, these tours are a great way to explore beyond the main beach.

We also noticed how environmentally conscious most operators were—reef-safe practices, clear briefings, and genuine respect for the marine environment. It added to the sense that Coral Bay is a place trying to protect what makes it special.

           4WD Tours Without Needing a 4WD

While Coral Bay itself is accessible by standard vehicle, some of the surrounding areas—like parts of Cape Range National Park—are best explored via four-wheel drive. The good news is you don’t need to own one to experience them.

Guided 4WD tours run regularly, taking visitors to remote beaches, rugged coastline, and scenic lookouts that would otherwise be off-limits.

The contrast between the calm reef and the wild, arid landscape inland is striking. Red earth, sharp limestone formations, endless sky.

For travellers sticking to sealed roads, these tours are an easy way to see more without the stress or expense of hiring a 4WD.

           Doing Nothing: The Underrated Highlight

As much as there is to do in Coral Bay, one of its greatest pleasures is doing nothing at all.

Spend long afternoons sitting under umbrellas, reading, chatting, and watching the tide roll in and out. Time seems to stretch. There is no pressure to be productive or to “make the most” of every hour.

Sunsets will become a daily ritual. The sky will shift from blue to gold to pink, reflect perfectly on the water. People gather quietly along the beach, some with drinks in hand, others just standing barefoot in the sand.

In a world that often feels rushed, Coral Bay invites you to slow down—and rewards you for it.

           Food, Coffee, and Casual Dining

Coral Bay isn’t a foodie hotspot, but that’s not a criticism. The dining options are simple, casual, and well-suited to beach life.

There are cafés serving good coffee and breakfast staples, takeaway spots for fish and chips, burgers, and ice cream, and a couple of sit-down options for relaxed dinners. After days filled with salt and sun, no one will be craving fine dining.

Its easy to fall into an easy rhythm: coffee in the morning, snacks or light lunches, and casual dinners where conversations stretch longer than planned. Sharing meals with friends—swapping stories from different corners of the world—will become one of the highlights of the trip.

Accommodation for Every Style and Budget

Another reason Coral Bay works for such a broad audience is the range of accommodation. Caravan parks, backpacker lodges, self-contained apartments, and holiday homes all sit within close proximity to the beach.

You don’t need luxury to enjoy this place. In fact, the simpler the setup, the more it seems to fit the environment. Being able to walk everywhere, rinse off sandy feet, and settle in for an early night felt like a luxury in itself.

Who Coral Bay Is For (and Who It Isn’t)

Coral Bay is for people who love nature more than nightlife. For swimmers, snorkellers, slow travellers, and road trippers who prefer sealed roads over sand tracks. For couples seeking connection, solo travellers looking for perspective, and groups of friends wanting shared experiences without chaos.

It’s not for those chasing shopping precincts, clubs, or constant stimulation. And that’s exactly why it works so well.

           Leaving Coral Bay

Leaving Coral Bay was harder than we expected, but we had other locations on our list, maps marked and plans loosely sketched for the next stages of the journey. There was excitement in knowing more of Western Australia lay ahead—new coastlines, landscapes, and stories waiting to unfold—yet it was Coral Bay that lingered in our thoughts as we packed up and said goodbye. As we looked back one last time at the impossibly blue water and the reef so close to shore, it felt less like a farewell and more like a pause. Some places leave you satisfied; others leave you certain you’ll return. Coral Bay was the latter—a reminder that even as travel pulls you forward, the most special places quietly call you back.
